Calligraphy Workshop 2014

5th International Calligraphy Workshop 2014
The art of handwriting and the Brush

From 4th to 11th of October, 2014
Ca’ Pesaro and Museo Correr, Venice

The 2014 edition of the International calligraphy course is dedicated to the use of the brush in Western calligraphy. Traditionally used for oriental calligraphy, the history and tradition of the brush is also important in Western calligraphy. The course will start with the production of a single stroke, experimenting with different positions of the brush, variations in pressure and rotating the instrument during the actual stroke.

Every day the artist calligraphist Monica Dengo will begin the lessons with demonstrations before the students set to work themselves. The first two days lessons will be held in the Museo Correr Library, where the students will be able to observe and study the ancient writing, gleaning ideas and information from the original manuscripts before comparing the use of writing in different historical periods.

The lessons will then continue in the International Gallery of Modern Art of Ca’Pesaro, where the students will experiment on developing their own strokes, and producing free style alphabets, textures and compositions.

At the end of the course each student will create a large-dimension book with 50x70cm pages.
