November 8-9, 2025 – Hours: 10.00 am / 5.00 pm
Venice, Correr Museum Library
In this two-day masterclass, Korean artist and calligrapher Doo-Kyung Kim will guide you in the study of Hangŭl brush calligraphy. You will work with Korean Hanji paper and learn about its characteristics. You will be taught how to hold the brush to write the vowels and consonants of this very modern alphabet, which embodies the essence of Korean culture.
Created in the 15th century at the request of King Sejong the Great to replace the Chinese writing system used by the country’s educated elite, the Hangŭl alphabet was designed to fully reflect the sounds of the spoken language and to be easy to learn so that ordinary people could learn to read and write. Formerly known as Hunminjeongeum (The Right Sounds to Teach the People), it has only been used in official documents and taught in schools since the 20th century.
The shapes of Hangŭl characters are not arbitrary, but have been developed according to a phonological code. The vowels are based on three elements: the horizontal line representing the earth, the dot representing the sun in the sky, and the vertical line representing man, the mediator between heaven and earth. Consonants are formed by curves or lines with angles. Words are formed by placing these symbols one after the other, as is usual in phonetic systems.
Lessons are held in English, Korean and Italian. No previous specific knowledge is required.
Students will be invited to the opening of the CARATTERI/CHARACTERS calligraphy exhibition at the Correr Museum on Friday, 7 November 2025.
Course participants will have the opportunity to attend the evening lecture 10 Years: Designing an Archive by Rob Saunders, founder of the Letterform Archive in San Francisco, California, on Monday 10 November 2025, at the Correr Museum.

November 10-11, 2025 – Hours: 10.00 am / 5.00 pm
Venice, Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art
In this two-day masterclass, Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. and Monica Dengo will guide participants in exploring the communicative, expressive, and artistic potential of wooden typefaces in dialogue with handwriting. The workshop will focus on different typographic styles, matrices rich in history that can be colored, marked, and printed. These extraordinary wooden forms, dating from the late 1800s to the 1970s, will form the basis of our experimentation. The course will take place in the stunning spaces of Ca’ Pesaro. During the course, students will create posters and hand-bound books.
Through the use of bold language, graphic typography, and layers of color, Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.‘s prints embody an intensity that captures the eye and provokes the mind. The artist uses printing to express African American culture, just as, he argues, blues and spirituals have renewed music.
Monica Dengo’s work and teaching have always focused on creating cultural bridges. She has worked with artists from Japan, China, and the United States, and has taught worldwide.
Dengo and Kennedy have known each other since 2008 when she organized Amos’s first workshop in Italy at the Tipografia Sociale in Arezzo. They share an interest in the social purpose of all forms of art: while Kennedy uses bold language and messages, Dengo has focused on handwriting as a gestural expression that goes beyond readability. The power of text and the power of abstraction will meet in this stimulating workshop.
