1. A Chinese perspective on the art of calligraphy
Masterclass by Wang Fei and Monica Dengo
5-6-7 October (hours 10.00 – 18.00), 8 October (hours 10.00 – 16.30)

The four-day masterclass will study the visual essence and profound beauty of Chinese calligraphy. On the first day, Wang Fei, professor of Chinese literature and calligraphy at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, will introduce the fundamentals of Chinese writing, offering a window into one of China’s most important art forms. The course, which will continue with three days curated by Monica Dengo, will focus on the abstract compositional beauty of ideograms, asymmetrical balance, and the relationship between paper, ink and brush characteristic of shufa, Chinese calligraphy.

Monica Dengo has long been dedicated to rediscovering the art of freehand writing in our country. She collaborates with the Correr Museum Library to promote the knowledge of calligraphy through courses, organisation of exhibitions and themed events.

Wang Fei, a scholar of calligraphy and seal engraving in China, is a professor of Chinese literature and calligraphy at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Here in 1999 he founded one of the first European schools dedicated to the art of Oriental calligraphy. He directs numerous courses dedicated to handwriting and regularly exhibits his works in the Lake Geneva region.

 

2. Writing: a thread linking to the future
Masterclass by Ewan Clayton and Monica Dengo

Monica Dengo and Ewan Clayton have been exploring the act of sign-making for many years. In this retreat on the island of Murano, they will share their studies and explorations through practical activities that include breathing exercises, movement, dance and listening to sounds. During the course they will explore the influence that Chinese calligraphy has had on Western calligraphy, particularly in the work of the two calligraphers. In this course, they will share their experiences and how they incorporated aspects of Asian philosophies into their teachings and works.

Monica Dengo has long been dedicated to rediscovering the art of freehand writing in our country. She collaborates with the Correr Museum Library to promote the knowledge of calligraphy through courses, organisation of exhibitions and themed events.

Ewan Clayton, lecturer in design at the University of Sunderland in the UK, where he directs the International Calligraphy Research Centre, calligrapher and author of The Golden Thread, History of Writing (Bollati Boringhieri, 2014), member of the teaching staff of the Royal School of Drawing in London, lives and works in Brighton, UK.

 


 

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Lessons are conducted in English and Italian. No previous specific knowledge is required.

The masterclasses will take place in the large spaces of the Abate Zanetti School and students will also have access to the outdoor garden. Thanks to an agreement with a hotel on the island of Murano, all students will be able to reside on the island and therefore immerse themselves full-time in study. 

Course participants will be guided by the curators to the calligraphy exhibition The way of writing. Seven hundred years of calligraphic art between East and West, hosted at the Galleria dell’Ala Napoleonica of the Museo Correr, on 9 October 2024, and will be able to participate in the lecture by Ewan Clayton History of Calligraphy in Europe and China, on 10 October 2024, in the Salone da Ballo of the Museo Correr.

  • To enroll in each module it is necessary to proceed with the booking on our portal at this link (select Workshop in program > select the chosen course – registrations available from May 2024)
  • Registrations are accepted in order of arrival. Upon reaching the minimum number of participants, the Booking Service communicates the activation of the course.
  • Enrollment is considered confirmed only upon payment of the envisaged fee, to be MADE WITHIN 3 WORKING DAYS FROM THE COMMUNICATION OF ACTIVATION OF THE COURSE.
  • “LAST MINUTE” BOOKINGS: In the week preceding the start of the activity, any “last minute” reservations can only be sent by email to biblioteca.correr@fmcvenezia.it These registrations will be accepted only if the waiting list is exhausted and compatibly with the available places. The payment of the fee, even in these cases, must be anticipated with respect to the beginning of the course.

 

COSTS

The cost of each module is 650 euros per participant and will be activated with a minimum of 15 members and can accommodate a maximum of 20.

  • Museum Pass to visit all the permanent collections of the Civic Museums of Venice (Palazzo Ducale, Museo Correr, Ca’ Rezzonico, Casa di Carlo Goldoni, Palazzo Mocenigo, Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna di Ca’ Pesaro, Museo del Vetro – Murano, Museo del Merletto – Burano, Museo di Storia Naturale)
  • Convention reserved for participants with a hotel on the island of Murano for the period of the masterclass
  • Stationery materials for carrying out the course
