Art of writing in the East
Masterclass with Kazuaki Tanahashi
18 and 19 November 2023, h 10.30-16.30
Museum Correr, Library
Master Kazuaki Tanahashi will accompany the participants in the discovery of East Asian calligraphy, starting with the ancient Chinese masterpieces. By faithfully copying and internalizing selected ideograms in different styles, you will get to the heart of the creative and learning process. The technique of writing with the brush will bring you closer to the aesthetic sense that underlies oriental calligraphy. By honing one’s skills and accepting imperfections, everyone will find a way to increase the pleasure of the act of writing with serenity and enthusiasm, in ways that can be applied to conscious healing in all aspects of daily life. Artistic interpretation and expressionist improvisation will be an integral part of the work. Everyone, even if they have no previous experience, will be able to follow master Kaz, using brushes, ink, color and paper, in a fascinating and engaging itinerary.
Kazuaki Tanahashi, born and educated in Japan and active in the United States, is an artist, writer and peacemaker. As a painter and calligrapher, he is the author of Heart of the Brush: Splendor of East Asian Calligraphy. He has had solo exhibitions and taught all over the world.
2. MARK MAKING FOR THE IMAGINATION
Art of writing in the West
Masterclass with Monica Dengo
25 and 26 November 2023, h 10.30-16.30
Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art
The calligraphy artist Monica Dengo will focus her teaching on the value of freehand writing today, on the written mark and its link with body/form/mark-making. Starting from the act of making marks and copying them, everyone will be able to discover through direct experience how Western handwriting contains some common elements with brush writing in the East.
The course will be mainly practical. We will start with the writing of a word, then move on to the single mark, the gesture, the pressure, the space/form balance and finally the art of freely tracing marks on paper. For some the text will remain the fulcrum of the experience, for others it will only be a starting point towards abstraction, for still others the only apparently casual mark will be fully satisfactory. Participants will discover the expressive potential of handwriting and its value as a practice of concentration and well-being.
In this journey we will draw inspiration from the words of the poet Tsering Wangmo Dhompa “Emptiness is not deprivation of …, or a lack of meaning, rather emptiness indicates a potential. Emptiness is like zero where zero is an indicator of nothing but the beginning, it is the possibility of what may come after that makes zero so crucial”.
Monica Dengo, engaged in the rediscovery of the art of freehand writing in our country, has been collaborating for many years with the Correr Museum Library in the work of promoting the knowledge of calligraphy through courses, organization of exhibitions and themed events.
