IV INTERNATIONAL CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP
The art of handwriting: Performing every day
5th-12th October 2013, Venice
The 2013 edition of the international calligraphy course is dedicated to the experimentation using pointed instruments: nibs, brushes and any kind of experimental instrument made of cardboard, tin or wood, that can produce a stroke with the traditional contrasts of the pen in contemporary works.
During the course the teacher, the calligraphy artist Monica Dengo, will give performances every day, before the students start their work. It will begin in the Correr Museum Library, where the students will observe and study the ancient writing in original manuscripts and then see how the quill was used in the past. From there they will go to the International Gallery of Modern Art – Ca’ Pesaro, where they will continue their experimentation using contemporary instruments.
Alphabets, writing and textures will be developed from the strokes produced.
Every day each student will create a finished book.

Presentation of the programme and library, distribution of materials and handbooks.
Sunday 6th October 2013, 9.30 am – 5.30 pm
Correr Museum Library
Study of the historical forms of manuscripts and the influence of the use of the square cut tip on the forms of Latin writing. In particular, attention will be paid to manuscripts in Caroline, Gothic and round Gothic, humanist and chancellery writing. At the end of the day the students will produce a book with all their work.

The start of experimental studies using pointed instruments.
All possible strokes, free gestures and illegible writing as body experience.
Music will be played in the background.

Wednesday 9th October 2013, 9.30 am – 5.30 pm

Performance by Monica Dengo.
Creation of an alphabet starting with the images of alphabets from other cultures, photographs of rupestrian engravings, works by abstract artists from the 1900s, italic writing in the eighteenth century and more.
Each student will develop his/her own alphabet using a pointed instrument and ink.
Creation of a book.
Thursday 10th October2013, 9.30 am – 5.30 pm

Performance by Monica Dengo.
Development of textures and rhythms with and without interlinear spacing. From linear writing to the free use of the space on a page. Creation of a book.
Friday 11th October 2013, 9.30 am – 5.30 pm
Ca’ Pesaro. International Gallery of Modern Art
Performance by Monica Dengo.
The students will produce a large-sized work that will then be folded and cut, creating another book.
Saturday 12th October 2013, 9.30 am – 1.00 pm
Display of all the works and course conclusion

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
The course is open to all lovers of handwriting, calligraphists, artists and designers. Beginners may also take part. Anyone having already taken part in the previous editions may follow a personal, advanced course with the teacher, focussing on individual work.
All lessons will be held in English and in Italian if necessary, at the Correr Museum Library and the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art.
No more than 20 participants will be admitted to the course.
A minimum of 12 participants is required for the course.
COSTS
Euro 650,00 per person
Handbooks, dossiers and the material necessary for the activities will be provided free of charge, as will the Museum Pass to visit the museums of the Fondazione during the course (Doge’s Palace, Correr Museum, Ca’ Rezzonico, Carlo Goldoni’s House, Palazzo Mocenigo, Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art, Glass Museum – Murano, Lace Museum – Burano, Natural History Museum).
Participants will also have a 10% discount on beverages and food at the Cafè in Ca’ Pesaro, where they can go during the lunch break and/or coffee break.
